Mama and Daddy said that they would buy each of us kids our senior class rings. They wanted to show us how proud they were of our graduation from high school. It was time to order the rings. When I looked at the prices, I gasped, "You have got to be kidding!" Mama and Daddy had bought Billy and Pamela their rings a few years before. They would have to buy Dale's ring the next year. They were committed to buy Rita and Mark's ring in another few years. How could they possibly afford this?
I sifted through the order book. I noticed that you could "mix" and "match" the band and the stone. You could also choose inscriptions and designs. You basically designed your own ring. There were different prices for each choice. I chose the basic items in each category and designed a pretty good looking ring. When the prices were tallied, I still felt it was way too much, but it was about one-third the price of everyone else's rings. When the rings came in, I wore mine proudly. To me, it looked as big and as pretty as any senior class ring could. Of course, Debra wore it! She liked it, and that's all that really mattered anyway!
I think class rings are very important. They are a symbol of achievement. Most people still have theirs after many years. However, there is something far more important that we should be striving for. Peter said in 1 Peter 5:4 "And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away." This is the ultimate "Graduation"!!!
