I loved the summer time! During the day we would catch June Bugs. I loved their gleaming green backs and reddish gold bellies! We would tie a string to their back leg. They would fly to the end of the string where we would hold them like a kite. When we finished playing with them, we let them go. During the night we would catch Lightning Bugs. I think some called them Fire Flies. You could put several in a jar and light up the night! When we finished playing with them, we let them go.
House flies were another matter! We would smash them flat with a fly swatter! It was never acceptable to let them go! We had roosters with beautiful colored feathers; red, gold, black, yellow, etc. After having them in captivity for a while we would chop their heads off and eat them! It was never acceptable to let them go!
Roscoe and Rufus were two of the many cows Daddy raised. You could call them by name and they would come running! We would pet them and rub their nose and ears, just like we petted our dog! One day Daddy carried them away. He brought them back in boxes full of white packages marked "Roast"; "Ground Beef"; "Steak"; etc. We ate them! They were delicious!! We did not eat our dog.
We knew there were differences in the creatures around us. Some you killed, some you let go, and some you ate. The trouble with extreme groups today is that they can't seem to tell the difference between a house fly and cow. God has given us enough sense to do what he told us to do in Genesis 1:28
"And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."
