I hated to go to church! It was a place that you couldn't talk, run, fight, or even look cross ways! If you did, you paid for it dearly when you got home! Mama didn't allow any unruly behavior. She ran a tight ship! On Sundays we all marched in and almost filled up an entire pew. Mama and all six kids. Daddy generally stayed home. Not a word, not a peep, not a sound came from any of our mouths for a little over an hour! If you wanted to see a miracle at church, Mama made one happen every Sunday morning!
One Sunday after church a lady in the pew behind us leaned over to talk to Mama. She was very impressed with our behavior. She handed her some money and said, "Buy those kids some ice cream"! Now you must understand. We rarely had ice cream - it was just too expensive. Getting an ice cream cone was as rare as seeing teeth in a frog's mouth!
When we got into the car we eyed the money! We knew that Mama could use that money for something else. She could fill the car up with gas (back then you could). She could buy enough groceries to feed us a couple of meals (a pack of Pinto beans goes a long way). She could pay a bill. "Mama", I asked, "What are you going to do with that money?" She looked at me and said, "Exactly what the lady told me to do with it"! I loved going to church that day!!
Whenever we do right, it will be rewarded. God said so - Psalm 37:3 "Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed."
