Debra and I were looking for the church in Florence. One of the members of Hawk Pride church of Christ had passed away. We were late for her funeral. I was unsure which road to turn onto that would take us to the building. We had already taken the wrong road once, I was pretty sure it was the next right. Then I saw John Hester's car in front of me. He was scheduled to preach the funeral! He was late too!
John's car turned left! I thought we were supposed to turn right! Surely he knew where the church was. I followed him. After we drove for a few blocks, he pulled over. We drove up beside him. His voice trembled with frustration! "A radiator hose blew on my car. I got that fixed, but now I can't find that church building!" I told him that I think we should have turned the other direction. We turned around. The funeral had already started. They had sung a few songs before our arrival. John went directly to the pulpit, made an apology, and then delivered a wonderful eulogy!
When we doubt ourselves, we generally follow those we trust. That's ok, but we should always be aware that they could be wrong too! John's frustration had clouded his thinking. We both wanted to go to the same place, but we were going in the wrong direction. We hear people say all the time, "We are all going to the same place", but if we follow someone who is on the wrong road, do we really think we will get there? Jesus put it like this in Matthew 15:14 "... And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."
