We were very grateful to meet Faye Foster. She worked with the Tuscumbia Housing Authority. We explained that we needed a place to live closer to work while we were trying to go to school. She processed the paper work and helped us get into McClain Homes apartments and later Gary Courts. We weren’t looking for a hand out. We simply needed a hand up. She provided that! We will never forget what Faye did. I don’t know if she really realizes what she did for us in those days.
I had been to school and work all day. It was very late when I got home. Debra was not there. Where could she be? The door was locked and I had no key! This was before text messaging and cell phones. It was NOT before pen and paper … she had not even left a note on the door! I circled to the back of the apartment and crawled into a window. I was angry. There were lots of reasons Debra could be gone. Something could have happened to Michael. She could have had an accident trying to get back home. I didn’t want to be worried, I'd rather be mad. Just when I didn’t think I could get any more frustrated, there was a knock on the door. It was the Tuscumbia Police! “Do you live here?” they asked. “We just got a call that someone crawled into the back window.” After telling them what had happened and proving that I did in fact live there, they gave me another suspicious look and left. I was fit to be tied! When Debra got home, though she had not been in an accident, she explained how bad her day had been. It was worse than mine!
Sometimes things just happen. We can choose to become angry and cast blame. We can also choose to realize that we are not the only ones having a bad day!
