When my son, Michael, was just a little one, he could do remarkable things. He could turn flips, and balance himself on one leg, etc. Of course, as a proud father, I thought he was exceptional when he stuck out his tongue or opened his eyes!
There was a small crowd gathered so I thought I would show off Michael's talents. "Michael", I commanded, "Stand on one foot." Without hesitation he walked up to me and stood on my right foot! Truly remarkable!
Michael obeyed my command exactly as I stated it, but that was not what I meant! He had misinterpreted. I'm convinced that we misinterpret much of God's Word. We read what it says, but miss what it means. I can just imagine God, sitting on His throne, chuckling at us when we get it wrong. However, some things we can't afford to get wrong. What if I had told Michael to stand on his head? If he got that wrong, he could still been trying to get his feet on top of his head! God expects us to understand Him! Matthew 15:10 "And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:" What have we been misunderstanding? Most of our misunderstanding comes when we WANT to understand it a certain way and REFUSE to really listen. What will we understand today?
