The skies were darkening in the west. I knocked on the door of the house in Muscle Shoals. The homeowner had invited Allen's Air Conditioning, Inc. to give him an estimate to replace his central heating and air conditioning unit. I usually sat down a few minutes with the homeowner to make sure I understood exactly what they were interested in. I would survey the inside of the home before I got into the crawlspace or attic. Since the clouds were getting more ominous, I opted to go under the floor first. I would do the inside work after the rain began.
There was a hollowed out place in the ground at the access door. When I removed the door, I could see that it was going to be a tight squeeze under there. It began to rain. Sliding on my stomach, I made it to the duct work. I needed to know the height and width. The height was easy to get, it was in my face! The width was another matter! The top of the duct was against the floor. The bottom of the duct was only a few inches from the ground! I lay on my back and slid my metal "Stanley" tape measure beneath the duct. If only I could hook the end on the other side of the duct, I could get a measurement. Just as I had jammed my arm between the moist earth and the metal duct wrestling with the metal tape measure, there was an explosion! A bright light filled my eyes. An electrical surge ran through my arm and into my legs! In just a moment I realized lightning had struck nearby and ran through the duct work. I scurried to the access door. The little ditch in front of the door was full of water. It didn't matter, I sloshed through it! Running as fast as I could through the torrential rain and lightning bolts, I made it to the carport. The homeowner flew open the door and ushered me into the house. He had seen the lightning strike and had feared for my very life! Me too!
I knew that the storm was coming, but I really wasn't expecting the lightning strike! Jesus said in Matthew 24:27 "For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." We know that he is coming, but are we EXPECTING him?
