When Mama brought in ground beef - we called it Hamburger Meat - Daddy would get a big pinch of it and eat it raw! Those of us who thought this was cool would do the same. Mama would get upset. She wasn't worried about the potential for Escherichia coli (E Coli) poisoning - who knew what that was anyway? She was worried how she was going to stretch the small amount of meat that was left to feed eight people! To make this happen Mama would get a loaf of bread - we called it light bread - and pinch it into pieces. She would add the bread to the meat. Almost miraculously, a small handful of meat multiplied into a large mass. It was delicious!
When I moved to Mississippi last year I learned more about Slug Burgers. I did not know that they were invented in Corinth, Mississippi during the depression. In order to make ground beef go further and cost less the inventors added potato flakes and flour. Today, some companies add soy beans to get more out of their meat. Mama had her own version of the slug burger!
When Jesus wanted to feed a multitude he did it with loaves and fishes Matthew 14:19. Mama did it with loaves and hamburger meat! I realize that Mama didn't perform miracles, but sometimes when I think about what she accomplished - I wonder! I have no doubt that God was looking out for us!
