I loved Limerock church of Christ. It was where Debra, my wife, was baptized. It was where I was positively influenced by wonderful families like the Garretts, Penningtons, Olives, Holts, Fishers, and others. I had preached my first sermon there. Preachers like Don Wagonner and Kenneth Orick had made great impacts on my spiritual life. We were living on Hawk Pride Mountain. Limerock was on Underwood Mountain, two mountains away. The Hawk Pride church of Christ was right next to our house! We decided to start worshipping there. That is where I met him.
John Hester preached at Hawk Pride on Sunday nights. Jim Massey, one of the professors at International Bible College in Florence, AL, preached on Sunday Mornings. John also taught the men's Bible class on Wednesday nights. I attended his class. John's ability to teach was incredible. He didn't just know Bible facts, he understood Biblical principles, principles that he applied to his life. When you asked him a question, he not only answered the question siting the scripture reference, he explained how it could help you in your personal development. He, his wife, and his four children were a solid, spiritually minded family. I began to crave his teaching and insights. He freely gave me his time and attention. He contributed more to my spiritual development than anyone else in my life. I consider him to be my mentor.
Everyone should have a mentor. Everyone should BE a mentor. Who can you think of today that could mentor you? Who can you think of today that you could mentor? Both of those people are out there, and they are waiting for you! Find them! I can almost hear John Hester telling me ... 2 Timothy 2:1 "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus."
