It was January of 1986. We had just enrolled into Bible College full time. I was working full time at Shop Rite grocery. Spruce Pine church of Christ was allowing me to preach for them regularly. Some said we were "burning the candle at both ends". That didn't seem right. That would imply there were only two flames! It seemed there were a lot more "fires" than that! It was that same year that we decided to add one more little thing to our lives.
March 14th, 1986, my mother's brother and his wife had a child in Cullman, AL. Due to certain circumstances, the Department of Human Resource (DHR) placed the child in a foster home. We assumed that someone from the family would soon get him. Later that year, Debra and I learned that no one from the family had taken him. He would be put up for adoption to the general public. Debra came to Shop Rite and asked if I could take a break. We went to the storage room in the back of the store. As we sat on empty milk crates we discussed the idea of adopting the baby. Could we add one more little thing to our lives? In January of 1987, a 10 month old little boy became our son! We named him Michael David Conley.
Debra and I had been married five years. Though we had not had children of our own, Debra instantly became the best mother a child could hope for! It has taken Michael 28 years to realize this, but I think he finally knows! God wants us to become His children. He would be the best Father ever! How long will it take us to realize this? Ephesians 1:5 "Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,"
