You would not eat a cup of flour by itself. You would not usually eat a cup of sugar by itself. Most would not eat butter by itself. Many would not eat raw eggs by themselves. However, when you mix them all together and put them in a 350 degree oven for about 30 to 40 minutes - you would enjoy a wonderful cake! I have used that as an analogy for how "bad" things can often work together for good.
Mama's daddy had a lot of issues, that's all I will say about that. I suppose Mama wanted to forge some sort of relationship with him and make sure we kids knew our grandfather. He lived as humbly as we did. When we visited his home, we felt comfortable. He lived toward Cherokee in Colbert County where many homes, included his, had SULFUR water. This, we never became comfortable with! If you were very thirsty you could hold your nose and drink it. The taste wasn't so bad. Unfortunately, the AFTER TASTE was horrible! The smell of Mustard Greens cooking is awful, but the smell of Mustard Greens cooking in Sulfur water is unbearable! Granddaddy George loved Mustard Greens.
This helps me to see that sometimes "bad" things do NOT work together for good! Paul told us in Romans 8:28 "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Many would say that God is promising us that "good things" will always come to us. When you read the verses around that verse, you see that Paul said that those that "love God" often "groan" in this world. He then said that we will ultimately go to heaven - which is a good thing. Lynn Anderson was right when she sang, "I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden" - at least not here on earth!
