We had just installed a new air conditioning system in her home. It was the middle of a hot summer. It had been in the upper 90's for several days. She called and told me that it was 85 degrees in her house! I was disappointed. She had bought a good unit and we had installed it properly. I wanted to know why her house was hot! I went to her home to check it out.
Walking into her house was like walking into a refrigerator! She was sitting in her recliner wrapped up in a quilt! She explained how hot it was in the house. I thought she was sick or had lost her senses! "Go look at the thermostat", she said. Sure enough, the thermostat said it was 85 degrees. I measured the temperature of the wall. It was 85 degrees. When I investigated further, I found the water heater in a closet just on the opposite side of the wall! It was lying to the thermostat! We moved the thermostat. Problem solved.
She believed it was hot because the thermostat told her so, even though she was cold enough to wrap up in a quilt on a hot summer day! Folks do that all the time spiritually. The preacher tells them that something is true. Instead of investigating for themselves, they believe them, even though their "sense" tells them otherwise. Thank God for preachers, but be sure to "test" them. John put it this way in 1 John 4:1 "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." What doctrine have you believed for a long time? What does the Bible say about it? Go ahead and test it!
