Hazel was one of Daddy's older sisters. She married Henry Green. I don't remember much about them. Hazel was killed in an automobile accident. I do remember their children. The Green boys were much older than us. They liked Daddy and came to visit us from time to time. The Green boys were involved in things that are better left unsaid. They would tell stories about their excursions as we sat on the floor mesmerized. Who needed to watch Bonnie and Clyde when the Greens were your cousins! Some stories even Daddy would ask them to stop telling.
On one visit, one of them came in with a patch over his eye. We'll call him Author. When asked what happened, he told of a shootout they had been in. He was angry. His brothers said he should have ducked. Daddy said they should stop telling us this story. A few years later we heard that Author was killed in a car crash while playing "Chicken". We asked Daddy how you played "Chicken". Daddy said, "When two cars race toward each other until one of them "chickens" out." He went on to say, "If you play "Chicken", you better make sure that the other guy is a "chicken" or be sure you are! Author was no "chicken". I guess he picked the wrong guy to play with."
This game of "Chicken" sounded stupid to me. I made up my mind never to play "Chicken". If I ever find myself in a game of "Chicken", I wouldn't be too worried. I have no problem being a "chicken" when the consequences are that high and only your pride is at stake. However, there are some things in life that we should never "chicken out" on! Jesus said in Mark 8:35 "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it." Sometimes what is at stake is worth dying for!
