One of my favorite T. V. shows was "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom". I thought that was the name of the show. It was years later that I learned that "Mutual of Omaha" was a life insurance provider that sponsored the show called "Wild Kingdom". I was under the impression that all those lions, tigers, and bears could be found in Omaha - wherever that was.
There were two main characters, Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler. Marlin was the amiable grandfather figure that spoke with mild tones as he hosted the show. He told all the wonderful things that could be known about the animals. Jim was the action hero that tackled the grizzly, taunted the porcupine, and tamed the lion. At any moment you would expect to hear Marlin say, "I will sit here in the tent and make the tea while Jim gives the alligator an enema!"
My friends at school thought Jim was cool. I thought he was crazy! Marlin was my favorite! I could listen to his stories for hours! Later, Jim appeared several times on the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson. He always brought some fantastic animals on Johnny's show. Jim made it exciting, Johnny made it funny, but I guarantee that Marlin Perkins would have made it a lot more interesting!
Solomon said in Proverbs 24:5 "A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength." Perhaps Marlin Perkins was as strong as Jim Fowler after all!
